    I started to read it the other day. Gave up after a few pages. Hard to give an opinion that'd be useful to you, since it's so much a matter of taste. I think Joan Mellen may be too gracious to the novel being an English professor, though to be sure, others in the literary field have given it high marks. It didn't appeal to me because it seemed to be written precisely for that kind of audience. It's written very much in an English department high idiolect, with that sort of watery prosody and reaching for out-of-the-way GRE words at every opportunity. It may be a rewarding read for you. I couldn't say.
